My hives have hives!

So, this may not be a very pleasant post, but for some reason, I can't seem to think about anything else right now...

I got my allergy shots today a little later than normal. It was about 3 PM when I received my weekly stab. I waited my 30 mintues and drove back to the office. Soon after, I began to itch - slightly more than normal. Particularly under my arms and on my tummy. Then it got worse... I headed home about 30 minutes early.

So, now that I've had a chance to show Matt and look in a mirror, I have had a good look at the biggest hives since I had that virus attacking my nerves. Maybe it's back? I don't know, but man, do I want to swim in a tub of ice water right about now.

And yes, I did have Matt take a picture, but I'm not sharing online. :-) Too awkward...

Flooding in Indiana

My dad recently sent a email with pictures that a friend of his took after the flooding in my hometown of Hobart, Indiana. These pictures are from all over the town - many of my old "stomping grounds" were flooded. I had heard there was flooding, but I had no idea there was this much water...

The flooded football field in these pictures is where our high school footbal team played for years. I think there's a new stadium built now - or at least there is one in the works - but it is still sad to see this place under water. Brickie Bowl is on the site of where the high school used to be, but the buildings now house the middle school. The field has lots of ties to tradition and memories for people in Hobart. I marched on that field more than I can remember. And all the flooding around the lake - such a bummer to see how much damage all that water did to my hometown. I know I have friends that live close to the lake who have likely been affected by this mess. Makes me feel even worse for the people down in Texas and the rest of the hurricane affected areas...

Mondays

Of the times I have been sick in the past few years, I would have to say that more often than not, they fall on Mondays. I don't know why, but I would assume that it is because I have too much fun on the weekends, and my body is punishing me for it. That being said, there are some very good reasons and some not so good reasons to get sick on Mondays rather than other days...

Some good reasons:
- The week after you are sick is short one day. Yay!
- There are a few Monday holidays that allow for you to take a "rest day" without having to call in sick, like this one.
- You probably finished most of your chores on the weekend, so now you can relax a bit without having to worry about all that you can't get done.

Some bad reasons:
- You are sick, so you can't fully enjoy the extra day off.
- If you do have to call in sick, it generally looks bad, like you are just pretending so you can get an extended weekend.
- The bathroom that you probably cleaned over the weekend now needs another cleaning, but thankfully, that's just a small part of the house.

So anyway, I threw-up this morning around 2 AM or so... But I'm feeling a little better, so I'm going to be irresponsible and do what I was originally planning to do today anyway. Thankfully it is Labor Day, so I can still try and take it easy as much as possible.

Max's Great Escape

It's official: Max has earned his kitty-scout merit badge in chain-link fence climbing.

The story:

Yesterday morning, as Matt was leaving for work, he happened to catch a glimpse of Max darting from the yard next-door and heading to our own backyard. Since Matt was already in his car and driving away, he gave me a call. I got up, threw on some clothes, and left the bedroom to go collect Max. As soon as I stepped out of the bedroom, I saw Max waiting at the porch door. That's interesting... I wonder if Matt saw Max or another cat? ... But Max is pretty hard to mistake...

So in comes Max, and the day continues as normal.

After we got home, we ask the neighbors if they have seen Max outside the yard. The reply that they found him in their garage the day before yesterday. Of course, they are fine with that, but technically this is against city rules. Also, Max could become a pest to other neighbors if he got out. I argue that it's possible he's learned to open the gate - it's not that hard to do. Matt thinks he's learned to climb the fence. Hmm...

So we decide to test him to see first-hand what new-found skill he has gained. I take Mattie just outside the fence, and I call to Max to have him follow. He cries for a bit, tries to find a way through, but he doesn't really try that much. We need to raise the bar on the bait we are providing....

So Matt brings me some ice cream. Muhahaha! We have your attention now, kitty! Max tries especially hard to squeeze his way through the gate. No luck. No attempt to open the gate. I keep calling. All of a sudden, Max hops slightly and flattens himself against the middle part of the fence, and he starts making his way toward the top. Good boy, Max! At the top, he hesitates slightly, but decides he might as well jump/fall to the side with the ice cream. As his reward, I let him lick a bit of ice cream off of my finger.

And now Max's days of unsupervised hunting in the backyard are officially over. I am sad, but I have to remember that it is his own darn fault. Also, if he were to get out, he could get hit, and Mattie would be lost without him. :-( Looks like he'll have to get used to being mostly an indoor kitty from now on...

A Stye - Yuk!

So I'm not very happy this evening. I seem to have developed a stye in my right eye. My lower eyelid is very puffy, and this makes me sad. I picked up some eyedrops that are supposed to help with the irritation and swelling, so hopefully this horrid thing starts to shrink and disappear ASAP. Ugh - I really disdain eye problems...

A Long Day

I finally left work at 7 PM, and I was just in time to check my voicemail and find out that I had missed my monthly dinner with my Guidant pals. :-( I had to hold down the fort this afternoon, and I didn't even have time to use the restroom. Let's just say that I'm looking forward to the upcoming long weekend in Indiana and the long car rides with my hubby and good books-on-tape.

I think I need to rescind my previous post...

I came home after class tonight aroung 9 PM. Matt promptly informed me that the bunny did not make it out alive. Max was released into the backyard after Matt got home, and Max quickly discovered the location of the bunny remains. In an effort to rid ourselves of the deceased rabbit, Matt placed the bunny in an area of our yard that is out of the way yet also outside the fenced area. May the bunny rest in peace...

The Crack

There is a crack in the front screen on my cell phone. I'm sad.... I looked at it this morning when my alarm went off, and I thought there was a bug on my phone. I was scared for a second, but quickly came to my sensibilities. No spider, just a crack. :-( Hopefully it doesn't get worse before December, but just in case, we still have our old phones!

Tired....

My eyes hurt... I want to journal, but I'm too tired... and Matt says I have to go to bed. So it looks like there's not much I will write tonight! I'm looking forward to tomorrow night, but I might have to take a nap while I'm there... :-)

Good news and sad news

Last night I was able to complete my first paper of the semester in 2.5 hours, and this morning I did some editing before heading into work. I have been thinking about what to write for a week, which helped when I sat down to actually type. I think it went okay, but we'll see when grades are returned.

So here's my sad news... I was in a situation tonight where I felt a bit of rejection. I was actually impressed with how I handled it, and it is clear that I am growing in this area. It had been mentioned a few weeks ago that I was being invited to be part of a particular group of classmates for working on our final project. Nothing was set in stone, but the inviter hadn't clued me in to any changes in plans. I had been asked by someone else to be in their group, but I told them of my previous plans and asked that they keep me in mind, but not wait.

Well, being swamped with job hunting, I neglected to check on my original plans, and tonight it became obvious (in a non-spoken, middle school kind of way) that I was not welcome in the original group. I have my theories as to why, but as I am learning in class, it is never a good idea to assume that I know the interests of others...

So here's my plan: I need to at least touch base with the inviter to make sure we are okay. And even if things aren't okay, I will find a way to deal with it. Ultimately, I don't feel I did anything to provoke harsh feelings, so hopefully there aren't any problems. I just hate leaving the giant pink elephant in the corner with no one to acknowledge him...

Long story short...

My job is ending on Feb 29, so I'm hunting for work, which means more is on my plate. Lots to do, lots to do. I have to write my first paper of the semester tomorrow and finish updating my resume... scrapping was fun last weekend, but I need another weekend to regroup....

On another note, I love my husband so much and think he is so cute. FYI - he posted a fun story on his blog that you all should read. I will blog more after my paper is written and my resume is out on the web...

The Good, the Bad, and the Downright Frustrating

I finished my last paper of the semester and sent it to the instructor this afternoon! Yay! So now I have time to think about other things, like getting ready to leave for the holidays.

The bad news? I still have a lot of "work" that I have to do, so it doesn't look like I'm really going to get any sort of a break before leaving. At least while I'm gone, I will be forced to relax a bit. Then hopefully I can get most of the "work" finished before classes start up again at the end of January.

And now for the reason I am ready to scream at the moment - A while ago, Matt and I hesitantly decided to purchase an *affordable* (read "cheap") anti-virus software, b/c McAfee has gone up in price, we really hate Norton, and I'm not ready to fight any open source programs. Thinking that at least this software would be a straight install-it-and-forget-it kind of deal, we thought it was worth a shot.

I am glad to say that at least we didn't waste very much $$ on this piece of junk software that has brought me almost to the point of tears. I am so amazingly frustrated that there are simply no words to describe what I am feeling. Matt has agreed, although his computer didn't react as badly as mine, and so he purchased a copy of the more pricey McAfee program today. I am now reformatting for the second time in the last month or so, and I am going to be fighting to take the company up on their 100% money-back guarantee. Apparently the other users who hate this program have not had much luck with this, but by golly I will not go down without a fight!

Car Problems - again...

So the car is having issues again, but it's most likely a loose vacuum hose or a faulty AIC (which is what we had replaced last week). Looks like Matt gets to carpool with Dusty tomorrow...

The Buick is not feeling well

Matt took the Buick to Walmart today and almost got stuck on the way home. While stopped, the Buick just shut itself off. When Matt tried to start it again, the engined turned over, but it wouldn't start. :-(

Thankfully, while he was on the phone asking me what we should do, his second attempt to start the car worked. After Bible study, he took the car around the block a couple times and had no problems. Still, we don't want to risk him getting stuck in Minnetonka tomorrow, so Dustin (the good friend that he is) is lending Matt his truck for the day tomorrow. (Dustin has the day off work and doesn't seem to mind the excuse to stay in and play Halo 3.) Matt and Dustin took the car up to the shop, and then Matt dropped Dustin off at home.

So, Matt and I might be in the market for a new car, depending on the shop's diagnosis... Needless to say, Matt is back to searching through ebay motors for ideas and possible good finds. :-) He just put in a couple of really low offers that probably won't even be considered, but hey - there's no harm in trying. It would be a pain to have to wait till the weekend to shop the Owner-to-Owner Car Mart if we could get a good deal sooner...

I've got the sniffles

I woke up this morning with a not so nice feeling in my throat. Actually, it helped me to wake up on time, which was nice. (I have trouble sleeping when my throat hurts.) I had to wake up at 5:15 in order to have enough time for getting ready and driving to work by 6:30. So I grabbed a bag of cough drops as I headed out the door, and I was able to make it to work on time. Yay!

Then my day went on with me going through about half the bag of cough drops and using about 10 tissues - not too bad, but still, this is definitely a case of the sniffles. :-(

Feeling Blue

I need some happy thoughts sent my way... anybody have anything good?

Partying it up the "Sharp" way

Matt and I definitely chose the wrong route to get to Indiana. We have usually had luck going straight down along the lake through Chicago, but this time there was construction. It ended up taking us over 10 hours. We will be going the "long way" home, which should take us 8.5 hours, and it what we should have done in the first place...

Friday night was really tame. Just my dad, his 3 siblings, my grandma, Matt, and I went to grandma's for a chili dinner. We didn't stay too long, b/c 5 of us left for Notre Dame around 8:30 to go see my cousin Catherine, an ND sophomore. The big reason for us going so late was that the ND marching band drummers hold what they call a "drummers circle" on Friday nights before home games. It's kind of a pep rally lead by the percussion section that lasts for about 40 minutes starting at midnight. Needless to say, we were up late on Friday.

Saturday was a lazy day before the party. We slept in, watched Spaceballs, went for a walk on the beach with Dad, Grandma, and Aunt Janet. Aunt Janet got really excited about the regurgitated pellets we foundon the beach...ask me later. Then we went back to dad's and watched Sense and Sensibility. (It was my second time seeing the movie, but my first time understanding it.) We got to the party around 7, and Dad was surprised, although he knew something was up. Our music picks went over very well, and the party ran smoothly. Most people left around midnight, but family hung out until 1 or so.

And now, we have spent Sunday morning sleeping in. Matt is making me breakfast as we speak. Even my dad slept until almost 9 am, which is nearly unheard of. And I am starving, so I'm going to go eat my breakfast and get ready to drive for yet another 8.5 hours of my weekend!

Traffic!

I spent an hour and a half driving 8.5 miles today. Because of this, I was 30 minutes late for class. Of course this is okay when you are in grad school, so no big worries. The good news is I was able to keep myself from crying even though 1 hour of that time was spent travelling about 1 mile down 1st ave. Now I know we talked about slowing down in Bible Study last night, but this is just a little bit ridiculous and nerve-racking. I have to drive there, I don't want to reserve 2 hours to get 8.5 miles twice a week, just in case. So anyway, I did ask God to help me stay calm, and He came through. I was totally able to focus once I got to class, and my class let out 30 minutes early. So Matt and I got to watch Heroes before bed, and I requested pizza because I was in need of comfort food.

Stream of consciousness emotions and little to no sleep...

I had a mini-emotional meltdown tonight. The enginerd in me wants to analyze everything that could possibly be related so I can fix the problem. However, I have an even bigger problem. I’m way too exhausted to analyze. Nothing is making sense. Thought #1 – I’m tired, that’s why.

But let’s not stop there. I can’t remember the last time I cried. How long has it been? Maybe my husband or my girlfriends can remember, but I certainly can’t. Thought #2 – it was just time, that’s why.

Wait a second – screwed up hormones? Possibly… (Thought # 3…) It’s conceivable…

Break – Insert random movie quote:
Humperdink: I think you're bluffing.
Westley: It's possible, pig. I might be bluffing. It's conceivable, you miserable vomitous mass, ...
End Break

Thought #4 – I seem to have committed an unusually high number of faux pas tonight, mostly recognized only by yours truly. I tend to hold myself to high standards. Realizing that I am just as flawed as everyone else (if not more flawed), my dream of proving my worth through my actions is yet again crushed. Grace wins, as expected. Praise God for that. Yet I still am left feeling pretty idiotic and stupid…

Thought #5 – I’m feeling a little selfish about this one, but here’s the thought: When is it okay for me to have a bad night? Would anybody truly care if I shared? Would people’s reactions be enough to make me feel loved, not just know that I am loved? (FYI – I do know that I am loved, but knowing and feeling are two different things.) My life probably appears golden to outsiders. Heck, even I feel like my problems are minimal compared to those of others. Am I starting to hold back to the point where people can’t know me? Am I becoming the dreaded “Minnesota Nice” to avoid alienating people but all the while doing just that?

Or (#6) am I extremely off base and so disconnected from reality that I don’t see how my actions are truly affecting others? Do I give off vibes that confuse things further? Do people think I don’t need them because I’m always shooting for such high standards and appear to be succeeding? Again, do people really know me? Or do they even want to know the real me? (Think: Lyrics to The Real Me by Natalie Grant)

I have so many acceptance issues. I know I could keep going all night with my analysis, but I do need to get at least some sleep. Yet I also need to process these things. Very few people enjoy “processing”, but thankfully, I know some who do (who also enjoy listening and cautiously providing comments). And I can always turn to journaling in the event that I find myself at a loss for a “processing” partner…

Out of town, yet again...

Here I am in lovely Mt. Horeb, WI, just got in from the almost 5 hour car ride... Having taken a quick nap in the car, I am starting to get my second wind, although Matt wants me to come to sleep.

When we got in the house, we were greeted by my Uncle Greg. His wife (my Mom's sister) and my Mom are down at the local bar for Karaoke night. Yes, I was tempted to walk down there at 12:30 in the morning to join them, but I do realize that I would probably get tired really fast, so better to stay in and post about this instead. :-)

And now for the big news....

As Matt and I started to leave town (we hadn't gotten far on little 10 at all), our hood decided to fly open while we were going about 40 mph. Now we have a bent hood that won't latch, more cracks in our windshield, and a mutilated windshield wiper. Thank goodness for Complete Auto of Blaine, our local, family owned, favorite auto shop! I called about 30 seconds before closing, and the owners ended up waiting for me for 30 minutes to drop off the car, even though there was a drop box for the key. What a great shop! I seriously need to submit a stunning report to the BBB for all this shop does going out of their way to serve customers. :-) Matt will be spending tomorrow morning on the phone with junk yards (looking for a non-bent, used hood) and the shop to determine what to do next. And the good news is? Matt got to drive the car that has cruise control on the trip to Mt. Horeb! Praise the Lord for keeping us safe!

And now, even though I'm still not tired, I think I should head to bed. Have a great Labor Day weekend, everyone!
